How to commission a custom illustration: A step-by-step guide

So you've spotted a custom illustration you love and you're thinking... how does this actually work? Don't worry - it's much simpler than you might think, and honestly, it's one of the most fun things to be part of.

Whether it's a portrait of your cute kiddies, your first home, or your pride-and-joy car, here's everything you need to know to get started.

1. Figure out what you’d love to capture:
First things first - what do you want illustrated? There are no wrong answers here! Think about who it's for, what the occasion is, and always remember to have a good look at my illustration style to see if it sits with your idea.

2. Dig out reference photos:
Clear, well-lit photos (natural light is your best friend!) make the biggest difference. A few angles is always helpful, and if your photos aren't perfect? Don't stress - just send what you've got and we'll work with it. Some people have sent me Google street view screen shots as references, so anything goes!

3. When do you need your illustration by?:
I usually require around 3-4 weeks to create your illustrations, so please consider this when planning. This allows time for sketching ideas, design approval, creating the artwork, tweaks required, printing and posting to you.

4. Place your order and tell me everything: Pop as much detail as you like in the notes at checkout. I’m really nosey so I genuinely love hearing the story behind the piece - it helps me create something that really feels like you or the feeling you were imagining.

5. Take a peek at your proof:
You'll get a digital proof to review before anything is finalised. Love it or want a tweak? Just say the word - I want you to be genuinely delighted, so don’t hold back with edits!

6. Getting your illustration to you:
Once you've given the thumbs up, I’ll get your illustration sent over to be professionally printed. I will carefully package and post in a sturdy cardboard tube. Then comes the best bit: waiting for the postie and finding the perfect spot for it!
